OC 8 Squadron - Wing Commander Stephen Kilvington MA BSc(Hons) RAF

OC 8 Sqn, Wg Cdr Stephen Kilvington

Wing Commander Kilvington joined the RAF in 1996 after graduating from Warwick University with an honours degree in Physics.  Following officer and Navigator training he was posted to the Tornado F3 Force in 1999 where he completed a number of operational tours in the Middle East and Falkland Islands between then and 2008.  He became a Qualified Tactics Instructor on the F3 Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) in 2002 and a Qualified Weapons Instructor in 2005; subsequently, he was intimately involved in the introduction of a range of new capabilities to the aircraft and the associated development of tactics and training.  Kilvington's final tour on the F3 was at RAF Leuchars as the training flight commander on the OCU.  In addition to operational flying tours, he deployed to Afghanistan in a ground based role in 2011 to directly support a UK Task Force as their Air Advisor.

Kilvington has completed staff tours in the Ministry of Defence and the Air Warfare Centre with a focus on operational capability, tactics and training.  He served as a desk officer in Theatre Airspace Capability between 2008 and 2011 managing several combat air and air platform protection programmes.  This role spanned the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review, after which he was formally recognised by the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Capability) for his work.  Within the Air Warfare Centre, he served on the Typhoon Operational Evaluation Unit as the Trials Programme Manager and, recently, as Officer Commanding 92(R) Squadron (Tactics and Training).

"Everywhere Unbounded"

Following promotion to Wing Commander in 2012, Kilvington attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course at the Defence Academy where he completed an MA in Defence Studies, specialising in military ethics.  His subsequent charge of 92(R) Squadron was curtailed in order to complete conversion training onto the E-3D Sentry aircraft ahead of taking command of 8 Squadron in November 2014.

Steve is married to Lois, a senior supply chain manager, and they share their family home near Grantham with their two young children.  In his free time, he enjoys running, cycling or trying to complete a long-standing renovation project on their house.
