100th Op ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR Mission Flown Out Of FOB Aktion.

15 March 2013

The 100th Op ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR AWACS mission to be flown from FOB Aktion, in the last year, was carried out on the 12th March 2013 by an E-3D Sentry manned by No. 8 Squadron personnel.

Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR (OAE) is a long standing NATO operation.  Launched in October 2001, in the aftermath of 9/11, OAE is a maritime operation in the Mediterranean Sea intended to demonstrate NATO's resolve to deter, defend, disrupt and protect against all forms of unlawful activity in the area of operations, under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.

Keeping the Mediterranean's busy trade routes open and safe is critical to NATO's security. In terms of energy alone, some 65 per cent of the oil and natural gas consumed in western Europe pass through the Mediterranean each year.  The challenge is to distinguish between legitimate and illegal maritime activity.  OAE is in the process of transitioning from a ship-based to a network-based operation, replacing permanently deployed forces with a combination of selected assets conducting surge operations, standby units, aerial surveillance assets, and ships transiting through the area of operations.  As a result of this transition, OAE now gathers and processes information and intelligence to build a picture of all maritime traffic in the Mediterranean Sea, with a selective focus on particular areas of interest.

NATO and UK AWACS have made and will continue to make a major contribution in support of OAE.
